President Lai Ching-te met with King Mswati III of Eswatini and his ministers during a recent visit to the African ally.

Lai was welcomed with a military salute upon arrival at Lozitha Royal Palace May 2, the Presidential Office said. He met with King Mswati III later the same day to discuss economic and trade cooperation, health care, and women’s empowerment.

The president noted at the event that this year is the 58th anniversary of the relationship between Taiwan and Eswatini, adding that the two countries have consistently collaborated to improve trade, advance agricultural development and empower Liswati youth. Lai called the king a leader with vision, citing his focus on infrastructural improvements, and thanked him for his speech at last year’s U.N. General Assembly about U.N. Resolution 2758.

In response, the king thanked Taiwan for supporting the electrification of rural areas and installation of water supply systems, as well as assistance establishing the International Convention Centre. The PO added that he also spoke warmly of the active participation of many Taiwanese entrepreneurs in various local initiatives.

After talks concluded Lai and the king witnessed the signing of a customs arrangement by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and his counterpart Pholile Shakantu. The president and the king then signed a joint communique to reiterate commitment to deepening mutual ties.

The following day Lai paid a visit to the Royal Science and Technology Park in Matsapha, where he attended briefings on the country’s oil reserve and a storage facility Taiwan is helping to build, as well as the Taiwan Industry Innovation Park.

Lai said the TIIP would enhance industry development, marking a major milestone in bilateral partnership. He anticipated that the park, which is currently under construction, would draw Taiwanese businesses to invest in Eswatini, thus boosting its financial resilience. (POC-E)
