The Tourism Administration, a part of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. April 20 in Taipei City, underscoring government commitment to sustainable travel.

In January 2025 the administration launched the “Sustainable Taiwan, Slow Travel” project through the TA’s Taiwan Stay website. More than 145,000 travelers booked with 110 local hotels through the initiative, the agency said, adding that the estimated yearly carbon reduction exceeded 3,250 metric tons.

The TA said the project’s exceptional performance was key to its decision to sign the agreement with THSRC to continue integrating resources. Participation has increased in the hospitality sector, with 137 businesses now part of the undertaking, the administration said.

Offered itineraries focus on energy efficiency and plastic reduction, low-carbon travel, recycling and reuse, regional revitalization and sustainable food, and travelers can enjoy discounts and even win free tickets. Upcoming recommended tours include the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung City in May and guided nighttime exploration of Xitou Nature Education Area in Nantou County in July, the TA added.

In addition to THSRC, the Taiwan Railway Corp. has also been stepping up efforts promoting sustainable travel, the TA said, citing collaboration between itself and TRC on the launch of sightseeing trains to provide tourists with more diverse travel options. (POC-E)
