Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim attended an event marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day April 29 in Taipei City, reiterating commitment to working with partners to create a more compassionate, peaceful and hopeful world for future generations.
According to the Presidential Office, the event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, German Institute Taipei and Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.
Those in attendance included Deputy Foreign Minister François Chihchung Wu, Legislative Yuan Vice President Johnny Chiang, ISECO Rep. Maya Yaron, GIT Director General Karsten Tietz, Knesset member Boaz Toporovsky, Polish Office in Taipei Director Janusz Henryk Bilski and French Office in Taipei Director Franck Paris.
The VP thanked the organizers for staging the event to remember the victims, show support for the survivors and pay tribute to those who risked their lives assisting the persecuted.
Hsiao said the Holocaust left indelible scars on the collective human conscience and serves as a salient reminder that democratic institutions and respect for human rights are the only way to deter tyranny.
Citing the Feb. 28 Incident and White Terror, the VP said Taiwan fully understands the importance of defending freedom and encouraging social reflection. This is evidenced by the promulgation of the Act on Promoting Transitional Justice in 2017 and other government work to uncover the truth and restore the reputation and rights of the victims of authoritarian rule, she said.
As a force for good, Taiwan is determined to eradicate hatred and prejudice at home and around the world, Hsiao said. At a time when authoritarian expansionism continues to threaten the international order, Taiwan remains committed to upholding shared values and will continue to work with like-minded partners to ensure that history is not repeated.
