Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said April 30 that Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with Australia and jointly expanding bilateral economic prosperity.

Hsiao made the remarks while receiving an Australian cross-party parliamentary delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group included Senators Carol Brown, Anne Ruston and members of the House of Representatives Dan Tehan and Jason Wood.

Taiwan and Australia share the value of freedom, support the democratic system and recognize that a democratic and open society is conducive to promoting economic prosperity, Hsiao said. She added that although global changes have brought some unpredictable impacts over the past few years, the bilateral relationship continues to grow steadily due to the complementary nature of the relationship in many fields.

Australia’s supply of energy, minerals and agricultural products plays a key role in maintaining Taiwan’s food security and energy resilience, the vice president said, adding that Taiwan further looks forward to strengthening collaboration with Australia and other Pacific countries in the fields of climate change and sustainable development.

Hsiao thanked the Australian government for emphasizing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability on bilateral and multilateral platforms, and for supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Taiwan will not take the actions for granted, she said, adding that the country is committed to a role as a force for good in the international community.

The vice president concluded by referring to the Global Cooperation and Training Framework as a mechanism to deepen cooperation with partners such as Australia and the U.S. and thus exert a positive influence in the region. (YCH-E)
