Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said April 23 that Taiwan is committed to a consensus on ensuring peace through strength so that the country can safeguard its hard-earned democracy and maintain its freedom and democratic way of life.

Hsiao made the remarks while receiving Carol Whitmore, commander-in-chief of the Missouri-based Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW), at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. She praised the longstanding and staunch relationship between Taiwan’s Veterans Affairs Council and the VFW and said she anticipates that the VAC would further study model practices for veteran care through exchange and mutual visits.

According to Hsiao, the VFW is committed to maintaining shared values of freedom, democracy and the right to national self-determination. She added that President Lai Ching-te also prioritizes strengthening national defense capabilities to safeguard Taiwan’s freedom and democracy and ensure Indo-Pacific peace and stability through deterrence in the current complex geopolitical situation.

Taiwan is determined to protect its hard-earned democracy, Hsiao said, citing Lai’s proposal to increase the national defense budget and the special defense budget bill. All stakeholders are gradually reaching a consensus on peace through strength, she noted.

The vice president went on to say that Taiwan and the U.S. have always supported each other through difficult times, adding that Taiwan donated antivirus supplies to the VFW and other U.S. veterans’ organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while the U.S. returned vaccines to Taiwan when the country was at the peak of the disease outbreak. She concluded by saying that these actions prove that unity and cooperation result in mutual strength. (YCH-E)
